What Should I Do?

I’ll return to that question shortly, but first I want to acknowledge you have done something useful already simply by visiting and exploring this website. If you also decide to read The Population Fix and if you reflect on what you read, you are well on your way to being part of an influential group of Americans who think like populationists!

Like all thinking Americans you have many other commitments in your life--commitments to others and commitments to yourself. Consequently, I want to answer the “What should I do?” question in a way that will permit you to also consider your other commitments. To do so, my answers in The Population Fix are arranged from the least time-consuming to the most time-consuming. For that purpose answers are organized according to potential contributions (1) of thinking, (2) of time, (3) of money, and (4) of additional energy. The buttons in the right banner will take you to a few examples of each. However, before you leave this page, let me tell you what I consider to be the most important thing you can do to help America break its addiction to population growth.

The first--and in my opinion, the most important thing you can do--is to answer for yourself the question: “How many Americans are enough?” How many people would you like to see in America two, three, four--or as some American Indians might say--seven generations from now?

I don’t believe I can emphasize this too much: It is critically important that you come up with your own number! Why? Because unless you can say to others, “I think an America of (insert your number) million people is a reasonable population goal,” it seems to me it is difficult, if not impossible, for you to criticize actions of others who are contributing to America’s population growth addiction.
